Atiku commends APC Governors for endorsing Calls to Restructure Nigeria

Former Vice President and a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, has commended the governors elected on the party’s platform for endorsing the grow­ing calls for Nigeria’s restructuring. The Progressives’ Forum, the umbrella body for the APC gov­ernors had while condemning the various hate speeches and divisive calls from the groups in the coun­try, maintained their support for an indivisible Nigeria, but called for a structured negotiation and consul­tations that would determine the way forward for a united nation.
Atiku, who has been a leading advocate of restructuring the coun­try, in a statement issued by his me­dia office on Tuesday in Abuja, de­scribed as patriotic the convergence of positions around restructuring by the governors who are leaders and stakeholders from different re­gions of the country.
He said that the governors’ posi­tion had confirmed that he was not just a lone voice in the wilderness in the clamour for the restructuring of Nigeria.
Atiku stated that the agitations for secession would not have arisen if the country had shown sincere readiness to address the underlying problems that feed the agitations by separatist forces.
The Turaki Adamawa, who noted that the restructuring debate transcends the ambition of any sin­gle politician in Nigeria, however warned that any attempt to ignore the agitations could make a bad situation more complicated.
“Avoiding a problem won’t solve that problem, with so much hate, distrust, suspicions and fears in the country, political leaders shouldn’t be afraid to confront the challenge.
“Our current federal structure should be freely discussed by allow­ing the federating units voice their grievances with a view to finding workable solutions that protect the rights and interests of all. Read more
